Cystic Fibrosis: A Future of Possibilities

A Future of Possibilities is a multi-asset campaign created for Vertex Pharmaceuticals marking a pivotal moment in the history of cystic fibrosis — transformed, within a few short generations, from a near-certain death sentence to one for which therapies now exist for more than 90% of patients. Perspectives from patients and caregivers trace the arc: what came before, what is possible now, and what remains to be done.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES:

The narrative ambition of this campaign outpaced what we could execute through our usual approach — traveling to each of our 16 subjects, filming in their homes, following them through their lives. But we couldn’t accept the limitations of a conventional studio shoot where subjects feel disconnected from the texture of their own lives.

Instead we asked, what if we could immerse not just the audience, but our subjects in the arc of their lives, all of which have been transformed by advances in medicine — and capture that? So before each shoot, we conducted remote pre-interviews and gathered hundreds of personal photograph. We blacked out a room, set up multiple projectors, and built an individual immersive program for each person. Then we invited them to experience their lives unfolding chronologically, all around them. Each program ended the same way: a mosaic of thousands of people living with CF, whose lives had been touched by the same advances in care.

What we captured wasn't b-roll. It was something closer to witness — people seeing their own stories reflected back at scale, in a room built just for them.
