In This Together

The film follows two protagonists: Kirk, a graphic designer and former athlete whose 2013 lung cancer diagnosis was followed by remission made possible by clinical trial therapeutics; and Jeff, a clinical researcher whose commitment deepened after his husband's battle with cancer. The two never met. What the film captures is the invisible thread connecting those who do the work to those who need it.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES:

This story asked something specific of us as filmmakers: to hold two narratives at once, and to let them find each other. Kirk's story is one of survival — a life interrupted by diagnosis and restored, in meaningful part, by the science Jeff's work helps bring forward. Jeff's motivation was never abstract; he was fighting for patients like Kirk while his own husband was navigating a cancer diagnosis of his own. I was, too. At the time of production, my husband was finishing (successful, thank goodness) treatment for cancer. That proximity — to the fear, and to the hope — was present in every decision I made.
